Clarets defender Mark McGregor is working on the basis that being miserly will bring a big profit for the Clarets.

After a less than promising start to the Division One campaign, the former Wrexham player is confident the Clarets rearguard have found their feet and will provide the platform for success.

"We have got to build on cleansheets," said McGregor. "We got one on Tuesday night against Blackpool and we have to go from there and try and do the same again.

"It is what we have to do as a defensive unit and if we can play our part by stopping the opposition scoring then it means that the team has got a better chance of winning.

"We are wanting to try and keep a good record as a defence and if we can keep it tight at the back then our season is going to get better and better."

McGregor got few first team chances in his first season at the Turf Moor, player-of-season Dean West keeping him out of the right back slot, but his versatility has seen him get his chance this time round and he is determined to keep his place.

"I am just pleased to get a run in the team and I want to stay there," said McGregor.

"It would be nice to stay in the side and do well this season, but I knew when I came to the club I would have to be patient.

"It has taken time, but I was prepared for that and I was happy enough to watch the team doing well last term but to keep proving what I was worth with the reserves.

"It has also given me time to get used to the pace in Division One by watching games. You need to be alert at this level but we are putting together a good unit at the back.

"Ian Cox is a good lad and a good player and Arthur Gnohere is someone you just know has got a big future in the game and really what matters is how the whole back four works together.

"If we have a good understanding then the more comfortable we will be at the back and at the moment we are looking quite comfortable."

McGregor is also feeling happy with playing on bigger stages.

"I knew the first division would be a big step up and so it has proved," he said. "You get to play on some great pitched and in front of some big crowds and getting to play at Derby and Wolves already this season was a great experience.

"And it is because of that kind of experience that you just want to keep playing well and keep your shirt. Hopefully I am playing well enough to do that."
