RESIDENTS near a mental health hospital today voiced their security fears after a violent patient with a conviction for wounding went on the run.

Albert Oszmianski, 39, absconded from Kemple View, Longsight Road, Langho, on Friday without any of his daily medication.

A police spokesperson said: "Without it he can become aggressive and should not be approached."

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans today called for an immediate review of security.

Kemple View is a secure psychiatric unit, surrounded by a 10ft high fence, that provides rehabilitation for 64 adults with severe mental health illnesses in four separate units.

It is run privately by Partnership in Care Ltd and sells it services to clients like the National Health Service.

It can also hold people, like Oszmianski, who have been served with a hospital order after a conviction in court.

The unit is near the Rhyddings and Dales housing estates in the village of Langho off the A59.

It aims to hold people in a supervised, yet domestic environment that increases their independence while keeping a close eye on them.

Mr Evans, who has previously campaigned for better security at the Calderstones medium secure unit in Whalley, said: "I am obviously very concerned about this.

"I shall be contacting the management urgently.

"We need a review of the sort of people who are in there so that we can reassure local residents, many of whom are families with young children.

"For this to happen once is once too many but it is now the second time in a couple of years.

"We don't want this to happen again for fear their may be tragic consequences."

Residents nearby today expressed concern.

John Haworth said he was worried about the security and he thought more should be done to keep patients inside.

He said: "I'm concerned with people like that walking around. I think it should be more secure especially in the climate at the moment with the deaths of those two girls -- Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman -- down in Soham."

Adrian Bott said: "It's not just Kemple View that these people escape from, more of them get out from the unit at Calderstones as well."

Andrew Davis said: "I'm a bit worried about it, I don't have any children myself, but for other people who have it's quite worrying."

Insp Neil Haworth, of Blackburn police, today said that Mr Oszmianski was still missing and that they and police forces across the country were continuing their investigations.

Mr Oszmianski is described as white, stocky, 5ft 8ins tall, with dark brown receding hair in a skin-head cut.

He has brown eyes, speaks with a Midlands accent, and was wearing a white T-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms and white trainers. He was unshaven when last seen, and it is thought this has grown into stubble.

He has family in the Birmingham and Wolverhampton area and police believe he may travel to the Midlands.

He has previously lived in the Morecambe area and there is a possibility he may travel there.

Anyone who sees him should contact the police immediately on 01254 51212.

In 1999 sex offender Peter Wedge absconded from Kemple View with his married ex-lover and her husband after being allowed out for a day trip.

The director of nursing at the time said the unit hoped to learn from the case but said it was hard to see how staff could have prevented his escape.
