THIEVES stole a collection box and hundreds of pounds worth of stock after breaking into a charity shop.

They smashed a second floor window to get into the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals shop in Bradshawgate, Leigh.

Among the stolen items, which had been donated by local people, was a set of antique reference books and a vase. Gill Baxendale, the shop's manager, said: "They also stole a canteen of cutlery, which had also been donated by the public to raise funds."

Anyone with information about the weekend raid is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
