Bristol Rovers 2 Bury 1: Graham Barrow's injury time sending off caused a stink as the appropriately nicknamed 'Gasheads' ended Bury's seven match unbeaten record.
The Shakers first team coach protested vehemently at referee Paul Armstrong's decision to penalise Colin Woodthorpe for an injury time throw-in infringement.
The Berkshire official deemed Woodthorpe had tried to make extra yardage in his attempt to start one last Bury attack.
Barrow disagreed and was down the tunnel on the other side of the Memorial Stadium pitch when time was eventually called.
Player manager Andy Preece revealed several players had complained of tiredness prior to last Saturday's victory at Bournemouth.
But Bury were the team finishing strongest last night in their attempt to keep their run going and atone for a shoddy opening 45 minutes.
Preece was one of four strikers on the field at the end but it was the babe of the bunch, David Nugent, who found a way through.
Bury couldn't adopt such an adventurous approach at the start but they were chasing the game from the seventh minute after conceding a sloppy goal.
Terry Dunfield allowed himself to be dispossessed on the half-way line and without team mates to cover his error, Paul Tait was able to run on strongly and beat Glynn Garner from 20 yards.
Dunfield had a couple of efforts to atone for his mistake but his shots didn't trouble keeper Scott Howie.
Garner had to move smartly to push aside a free kick by lively Latvian Vitalijs Astafjevs after 36 minutes before the second and decisive goal.
Amazingly, it stemmed from Bury's injury time free kick in their own half. Howie gathered a loose ball following a Danny Swailes header and immediately punted it back downfield.
Isolated one-on-one with Guillano Grazioli, Woodthorpe panicked under pressure and watched in horror as the former Swindon front man, who missed a penalty last weekend, ran forward to lob Garner.
Bury were more lively in the second half but it should have been game to the 'Gas' after 67 minutes.
Inexplicably, Tait missed from close range after Robert Quinn directed Wayne Carlisle's free kick into his path.
However, the last 20 minutes belonged to Bury with Abbott, Preece, Swailes and Jon Newby all going close.
But two of the four minutes of injury time had elapsed when Lee Unsworth and Preece carved open Rovers for Nugent to score.
Bury had the momentum but Barrow's dismissal interrupted the Shakers flow and an equalising chance never came the visitors way.
