A MAN was forced to flee for his life after a vicious and unprovoked attack by an intruder at his home.

Police said the 43-year-old man received cuts to the head and body with what they believe was a knife.

He was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary where his condition was described as comfortable.

DS Sally Riley of Blackburn CID said the attacker burst through the man's door in Leamington Road, Blackburn, on Tuesday at 3.55pm.

The homeowner had left his door open and mistakenly thought a friend had called.

The knifeman pounced on him from behind knocking his glasses to the floor.

He was stabbed several times sustaining serious cuts to his face, head and body.

He staggered from his home to flee his attacker. Nothing was stolen from the house.

DS Riley said police were hunting the man, who she said would be heavily bloodstained.

A passing motorist and his passenger stopped their car to offer help to the victim. They then called for an ambulance.

DS Riley said: "This was a vicious attack to which there appears to be no motive.

"The man could have easily suffered more serious or even fatal injuries had he not fled. The attacker would probably have been heavily bloodstained and we are appealing for anybody who may have seen him.

"We are also keen to talk to the two Asian men in the car who helped the victim. They may have seen the attacker leave the house soon after."

The attacker was described as 5ft 7in and of medium build.
