A WEEKEND DIY job could have had dire consequences when a man set fire to the outside of his home while stripping paint with a blowtorch.
Bitumen caught fire at the Dalesford Close bungalow in Leigh at midday on Saturday but fire crews attended and prevented the fire spreading further. The attic was smoke-logged and facia boarding had to be removed.
A fire spokesman said: "It could have been a lot worse, but fortunately the incident happened close to the station and both engines were able to attend quickly to prevent major damage."
