FIREFIGHTERS saved the day when they managed to entice a trapped pony out of a ditch with a carrot.
The small male pony, named Micky, had escaped from a paddock at Moss Bank Farm in Higher Green Lane, Astley, on Saturday morning and fallen down the eight-foot ditch, which was too steep for him to negotiate.
Fire crews were alerted at 10am when the farmer discovered the pony missing. They covered the nervous animal's eyes with a sheet while they spent 20 minutes digging out the side of the ditch to create a ramp for Micky, before enticing him out with a carrot.
The pony was shaken, but only suffered a few cuts and bruises from the fall.
