NATURE and environmental matters have been this week's topic for discussion at the public enquiry into the Leigh Guided Busway.
Now into its second week, the enquiry intends to hear the arguments both for and against proposals to build a guided bus route using the old railway line from Leigh, via Tyldesley and Ellenbrook, to Manchester.
Opposers to the scheme, Noway Busway, led by Vanessa Hall, outlined their case against the plans, stating that the route would put local wildlife at risk, particularly endangered species such as Great Crested Newts.
In GMPTE's counter argument Doctor Peter Ireland, technical director for environment with Hyder Consulting Ltd, explained that escape routes would be installed for any animals that ventured onto the route.
He said: "The risk to wildlife is minimal, we are talking about traffic volume consistent with a quiet country lane.
"We would make sure that Great Crested Newts and other amphibians are fully protected prior to site clearance."
The enquiry continues at Tyldesley Top Chapel in Market Street for the next three weeks, between 10am-1pm and 2-5pm Tuesday-Thursday and 10am-1pm and 2-5pm on Fridays. For details call 01942 875973.
