BUN FIGHT: Police confirmed that scuffling had broken out among shoppers as they queued for bread. Officers had to be called to several incidents but not arrests were made. Long queues had formed in the town centre following a strike by bakers.
BNP: The British National Party beat the Liberals into third place in a by-election for the Eden Ward seat at Edenfield. Conservative Philip Dunne from Stubbins comfortably retained the seat with a 346 majority. The BNP got 80 votes while just 38 voted for the Liberal candidate.
