SOME readers may find a leaflet behind their doors appealing for unwanted clothing, and other items, for recycling for the Third World.
On receiving one myself, my first impression was that it was an appeal from a charity. Closer reading showed that goods collected were not to be given away to those in need, but exported and sold as second-hand clothing. The organisation is anonymous, doesn't quote a registered charity number and may well be a business venture.
If readers wish what they give to be sold on to people in the Third World, then they should respond generously. If, however, they would rather give so that their gift freely benefits those in need, then they should, perhaps, choose one of the many reputable charities.
