POLICE are investigating anonymous letters attacking the local campaign group which is fighting to save old people's homes.
The computer-generated letters brand CARE (Care and Respect for the Elderly) a "shambolic mess" and cast doubts over what the money donated to the fighting fund will be used for.
Vice-chairman Dave Ogden said: "One of the letters was delivered to St Mary's Catholic Club in Pine Street last week. CARE uses its committee room for meetings.
"Another letter was delivered to the Victoria pub in Ainsworth Road last Wednesday. We suspect we know who is behind it and have told the police, who are investigating the matter."
CARE was formed to fight Bury Council's plan to close several old people's homes which would cost too much to bring up to registration standards.
In Radcliffe Whittaker House was scheduled to close by the middle of next year. But last month at the High Court the council's decision was branded "unlawful" and it was ordered to go back to square one and reconsider its decision.
CARE has raised around £1,500 for its fighting fund so far, to cover any legal fees that may arise from action being taken against the council.
Mr Ogden said: "The letters could be very damaging to CARE and so it is important to dispel the rumours and accusations."
