ELDERLY residents can get their teeth into a new project to inspire community friendship.
Luncheon clubs, the first to be run by Bury Council, have started at Griffin House and Falcon House in Bury.
They will cater for residents at the two schemes, and also for all old people in the immediate area.
Councillor Mike Connolly, executive member for health and social services, said: "This is an old-fashioned recipe for community togetherness which can still work nowadays.
"People can enjoy a hot meal, supplied by Bury's community meals service, followed by entertainment.
"The main thing is that there will be plenty of opportunities to get out and meet others. That will help to reduce isolation, particularly over the long winter months ahead, but also improve the quality of life of individuals."
Coun Connolly added: "The clubs will be a focal point for old people to access a wide range of services, some of which may not be known to them. Luncheon clubs used to be very popular and we are quietly confident that this revival in Bury will be very successful."
The first meetings of the luncheon clubs was on Tuesday (Sept 17) at Griffin House and on Thursday (Sept 19) at Falcon House. They are now running weekly.
Elderly people living nearby who want to join should phone David Latham on 761 3725.
The council is working with Anchor Housing to launch a similar club at Naseby Court in Prestwich. This could start within weeks, with others to follow.
