JIMMY Anderson ended his first season of first-class cricket with 50 wickets as Lancashire produced a spectacular finale at Taunton.

It was the perfect way to draw down the curtain on a roller-coaster season, with Lancashire storming to an eight wickets win within two days and their Burnley-born young pace sensation grabbing the last Somerset batsman to complete his half-century of wickets for the season.

Peter Martin and Chris Schofield had stunned the relegated West Countrymen with four wickets each.

But captain Warren Hegg brought Anderson back into the attack and explained later: "It was a planned move. We all wanted Jimmy to get his 50th and it worked.

"He has had a great season and it was a good way to finish it."

Martin also claimed his 50th victim during his haul of 4-52 and Schofield's 4-35 was his best of the season.

Then, after the early loss of Mark Chilton and Alec Swann, David Byas and Stuart Law blasted their way to a target of 123 in less than 17 overs.

Anderson is in a four-handed battle for the club's Player of the Year along with Hogg, Swann and Glen Chapple, who has already landed the Frizzell Championship Player of the Month award for August.

The winner will be announced on Sunday night at Old Trafford and then Lancashire will thrash out plans for next season with a new batsman high on their priority list.
