KIND-HEARTED walkers in Blackpool pulled on their boots on Sunday (September 8) to take part in the British Heart Foundation's Blackpool Walkabout, backed by The Citizen.
Around 70 walkers enjoyed pleasant sunshine and a happy atmosphere while taking part in the fund-raising three and six-mile walks led by Blackpool's Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Barbara Hardy.
The walks were launched at Blackpool's de Vere Hotel, off East Park Drive, by Blackpool Borough Council's Deputy Mayor Councillor Norman Hardy.
He presented a cheque to BHF area organiser for Lancashire, Carol Gemson, and wished the walkers well as they set off just after noon.
The oldest walker on the day was Blackpool pensioner Catherine Freegard, who celebrates her 91st birthday in November.
Last year she raised more than £220 sponsorship, and is hoping to beat that this year.
"A few years ago my sister had a heart attack and it was wonderful what the medical team did for her. She's really well now but I've never forgotten what they did for her, they were so kind," she said.
"This is just a way of giving a little something back."
Coun Hardy welcomed back every walker and presented them with a certificate for completing the walks. His wife Barbara said: "We were asked to start the walk and straight away I said I wouldn't mind doing it because my husband had a heart attack a few years ago, and he does have trouble with his legs -- and to help the Heart Foundation.
"Halfway round I got talked into doing the six mile walk, but I'm glad I did it. So far I've been sponsored for more than £80 but I'm hoping to get some more."
And just before walkers set off Carole Gemson told them: "The monies you raise will help us fight heart disease. We don't receive any government funding so any monies you raise for us are totally appreciated."
Donations can still be made to the British Heart Foundation. For more details contact Carole on 01254 878321.
