SCHOOL REPORT: Tor View is a thriving, purpose-built community special school catering for young people aged from four to 19 with a wide range of learning difficulties.
Many of our pupils have additional physical and sensory difficulties. It is based in Haslingden and serves the whole of Rossendale, although the catchment area is wider, stretching to Clitheroe and Barnoldswick. Tor View school aims to inspire, and encourage its pupils to learn, enjoy and achieve. We confidently challenge the perceptions of what our children can achieve.
HISTORY LESSON: Tor View was established in 1992, initially as a split-site amalgamation of two special schools -- one for pupils with moderate learning difficulties and one for those with severe difficulties. It is now the only 'generic' special school in the area. Lancashire County Council is investigating the reorganisation of special education, maintaining but slimming down the sector. We aim to give special-needs pupils in Rossendale the very, very best in their education.
NUMBER OF PUPILS: The school started with 63 pupils but now has 105. We have more than 70 staff, including part-time, looking after 13 classes. Each class of between six and 11 pupils has a teacher and two special support assistants.
SOMETHING TO BRAG ABOUT: We are proud of our inclusion programme which means we work closely with our mainstream colleagues. Pupils from Tor View go into mainstream schools, where they can do GCSE courses, and their pupils come here. Our Ofsted inspection report said we were a good school with many excellent features both in the curriculum and the fabric. We intend to bid on this. We are increasing the use of information and communications technology, and we have a £100,000 project to turn the school grounds into a recreational learning space.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A £100,000 WINDFALL?: We would improve our sports facilities and build a sports hall.
