THE Mayor of Bury swapped his civic limousine for pedal power as he headed a drive to urge people to leave their cars at home.
Cllr John Smith took a ride in a cycle taxi -- top speed 9mph -- as Bury joined towns and cities across the continent at the weekend to mark European Car Free Day.
Fire eaters and stilt walkers entertained crowds in the town's Market Place as civic leaders tried to get across the message that there are sometimes practical and environmentally-friendly alternatives to using the car.
Bury Council's executive member for environment and transport, Councillor Stella Smith, said: "Here in Bury we have worked consistently towards reducing reliance on the motor car and that has involved a variety of schemes, from the introduction of cycle lanes and routes, to enhancing public transport and encouraging more people to make use of it."
"Through the regular bus and Metrolink services, not to mention the growing cycle network -- both on and off road -- our borough is extremely well provided with alternatives to the car." This will we hope, continue to improve, but we need to convince even more people to not only notice the different options, but to give them a try."
