I WAS fascinated to read about the 'Sober in the City' rules applied to granting a late licence for the Guild Hall (Citizen, Sept 19).
So basically the more 'high profile' you are, the more entitled to a drink after 11pm you are.
The mayor must have been disappointed then, 'panting for a pint'.
Perhaps a profile points system should be drawn up. The mayor could be worth six points, a celebrity like Jim Bowen might be eight points, while a Corrie star like Ken Barlow would be nine points, and royalty commanding the top notch ten points.
Then you could say each event has to raise a certain number number for every hour of the late bar.
So a bar until midnight might have 17 points worth of high profile in attendance, while an event with a bar until 2am would have to have 30 points worth.
An all-nighter would have to be a real 'high profile' job, maybe a couple of royals, a few TV celebs and the odd local VIP.
But what happens if the high fliers leave early?
Would the bar have to close, or could the minions be trusted to party on?
