VOLUNTEERS, including MEP Terry Wynn and Deputy Mayor Cllr Wilf Brogan, went back to school as part of a major campaign to clean-up the streets.
Groups gathered at Hesketh Fletcher High then set-out to tackle Atherton's litter problem.
Using pickers, gloves and bags provided through Wigan Council's People and Places programme a street scene action team attacked the mess in a blitz backed by local councillors from their Brighter Borough fund.
Adding to the atmosphere were willow weavers and an ecologist, face-painters and a disco.
Hesketh Fletcher head Dr Ted Walker said: "I think litter is an important issue facing our community. From October anyone over the age of 11 can be fined for dropping litter so let's hope the message hits home."
Mr Wynn added: "We must educate people not to throw rubbish in the road. There are plenty of bins around so there really are no excuses for dropping litter."
