A BLACKPOOL woman who set herself alight from a lit candle at her flat in Tambrook Close, Blackpool, on Wednesday morning is in hospital suffering from severe burns.
The woman, who has not been named, was outside the property, 'smouldering and smoking' from the effects of fire, when firefighters arrived at the scene at approximately 11am.
After her hair and clothes had caught fire, she had doused herself with water from the kitchen tap to extinguish the flames. By the time the woman called for help, her clothes had been burned off.
She tore off the remains of her burning jeans and ran into the street. The young woman was discovered by a passerby who ran to a nearby bakery to phone the emergency services.
"She was taken to hospital after being treated at the scene. It was clear she was extremely poorly due to the severity of the burns," said assistant divisional officer, Barry Shelmerdine, of Blackpool Fire Station. Although police and fire service investigations are continuing, there appear to be no suspicious circumstances.
