CLARETS skipper Steve Davis moved out of defence and into the heat of the midfield battle against Huddersfield Town last night and his manager Stan Ternent claimed: "I thought he was very, very good.
"Putting him in midfield is something I have thought about on a lot of occasions. He protected the two centre halves, he is good on the ball, he is good in the air and he is a real leader.
"That means it is a good place to have him. I have had it in mind for some time. Sean Gregan went for a lot of money to the Premiership and he is not a better player than Steve Davis."
Davis would have given the Clarets the lead in the second half had it not been for a brilliant save from Scott Bevan and the two hours of football were certainly a test for a player who only made his first start since injury at the weekend.
Huddersfield boss Mick Wadsworth is certainly a fan of the Burnley captain and he said: "I have no doubt that he is the best player not to have played in the premiership for the last ten years.
"That is why I was so pleased with Dwayne Mattis, he came up against Steve Davis and did a fantastic job."
Wadsworth was also delighted that Ternent had changed his formation for the trip across the Pennines.
"A first division club came here and changed the way they were playing," he said. "They went 4-3-3 to match us up but I though we were better at it than them. We had thought about going 4-4-2."
