BLACKBURN Hawks endured another 'hit and miss' weekend - but triumphed in the game that really mattered.
On Saturday a much-depleted Hawks side suffered a challenge match defeat at the hands of Paisley Pirates, although coach Bobby Haig was far from despondent.
"Okay, so we got beat 4-2 but the trip was very worthwhile as it gave me the chance to blood a few of the younger lads," he said. "We were without five or six key players including Craig Sharman who pulled out with a suspected broken finger so to lose by just two wasn't such a bad result."
Haig himself got on the scoresheet north of the border, as did Jamie Thompson, however the Scots stretched ahead from the second period onwards.
Back at the Arena on Sunday, the Hawks entertained Whitley Bay in the ENHL North with a much stronger squad to choose from.
The visitors moved into a 2-1 lead after the first period but that is where their scoring ended as the Hawks' defence turned the screw. Gordon Whyte and the returning Sharman were among the scorers for the Hawks, as was player-coach Haig who netted twice to give his side a pleasing 4-2 victory.
"If we were only going to win one of our games this weekend I'm glad it was this one," said a delighted Haig. "I'm extremely happy with the performance and it's two more points in the bag.
"We gradually got back into the game after a slow start and began to dominate - something I'll be looking for us to do from the first whistle next weekend."
