LANCASTER'S mayor shall go to the ball next year - in a diesel Skoda!
Following a long-running row over whether the council should spend thousands to replace the mayor's limousine, a local dealership has stepped in to offer a new car for free.
Lancaster City Council's Cabinet this week recommended acceptance of an invitation by a David Ian Ltd to provide the 12 months free use of a Diesel Skoda Superb 1.9 tdi PD.
The offer includes the option for the Council to buy or lease the vehicle after the 12 months free supply is over.
The Cabinet's decision means that the only costs to the Council for the next 12 months will be those involved in running the vehicle, a saving of approximately £ 4,000.
Cabinet member with responsibility for Finance, Councillor Geoff Wilson said: "We are pleased to be able to recommend acceptance of David Ian Ltd's generous offer which not only provides the Council's Mayor with a first class vehicle but also saves the Council, and therefore local taxpayers, a considerable sum of money.
"The Council is always keen to review its procurement options to ensure a cost effective solution - the replacement of the Mayoral Car is no different.
This proposal is an example of how the Council can work in partnership with local businesses to achieve the common good."
