CLIFF HANGER: Sixteen year old William Singer suffered a fractured vertebra and concussion when he fell more than 20 foot down a rock face. William of Wash Lane, Bury, had gone climbing with two friends at a disused quarry at Moorland Hall Farm, Ow'd Betts, Edenfield Road, when the accident happened.
After climbing down the 30foot high rock face once using a cradle, William, a sixth former at Derby High, descended a second time using only a rope. He had got only about six foot down when he fell, landing on boulders.
SKATE FLINTS: The boom in the skateboarding craze sweeping the country was brought to the attention of Bury's recreation and amenities committee. Members agreed that the upsurge in popularity of skateboarding merited an investigation to find areas in the borough suitable for youngsters to practise the art. But the committee also warned that it had no money in its coffers to lay out a modern skateboarding area and that any suitable site would have to be adapted for skateboarding at a very low cost.
WHAT DO YOU DO?: Transparent Paper were after bag tacklers, P&S Textiles wanted an experienced beam gaiter, Bury Ring Mill Ltd advertised for an undercarder or frame overlooker, while Spur Petroleum in Walmersley were simply after a fit labourer!
