HAVING walked across Greenland and travelled widely in Iceland, Norway and Finland, Bury Grammar School (Boys) offered a much more hospitable environment for Cambridge University's Dr Charles Moseley.
Dr Moseley was invited to the Tenterden Street school as chief guest at the annual prizegiving evening.
In his speech headteacher Mr Keith Richards stressed that the evening was a celebration of diverse achievements not merely of the prizewinners, but of all members of the school.
Mention was made of staff who left the school this year, including Mr Malcolm Skinner who retired after 31 years' service to the geography and geology department.
Mr Richards praised the A-level and GCSE successes and also the industry by pupils and support by parents which resulted in achievements in sport, outdoor education, music and drama.
Musical highlights of the year have been the Junior School Concert last December, the Senior School Christmas Concert in Bury Parish Church and the three performances of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers staged in February.
On the athletic front many new school records were set and in cricket the U 17 XI reached the Lancashire Cup Final.
Mr Richards said: "Thanks to the efforts of governors, teachers, parents and pupils the school is in very good shape. Public examination results are impressive, the numbers of pupils in both the junior and senior schools are healthy, the facilities have been skilfully and consistently upgraded and the teaching staff is committed not just to academic success but to the all round development of each new individual."
