A DRUNKEN man attacked his girlfriend's mother after a funeral, leaving her with a black eye, swelling and bruising.
Burnley Magistrates heard how Darren Springett, 26, punched Eileen Higgins after pinning her daughter to the wall - but could remember nothing about it.
Springett, of Langholme Close, Barrowford, admitted assault. He was told by the bench it was "absolutely terrible" that he had had so much to drink he did not know what he had done.
He was given a 12 months conditional discharge with £200 compensation and £100 costs.
Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said Mrs Higgins went to her daughter's house and heard shouting through the open bedroom window.
She entered, went upstairs and saw the defendant holding her daughter against the wall. Springett was abusing her and Mrs Higgins told him to get out.
The defendant said he wasn't going anywhere, starting abusing the complainant as well, then punched her.
Mrs Higgins went to Burnley General Hospital where she had an X ray to her cheek. No bones were broken although it was swollen. Police were called and arrested Springett.
Bridgette Hibbert, defending, said Springett had been to his grandmother's funeral and had a lot to drink. He was still with Mrs Higgins' daughter and they were due to move in together.
