FOR breathtaking cheek your correspondent "Objective Englishman" (Your Letters, Sept 17) wins first prize.

According to him, the millions of unemployed, the record bankruptcies, house repossessions, high interest rates, the destruction of whole communities, the financial fiasco of "Black Wednesday", not to mention the poll tax, are a testimony to the Conservatives' successful management of the economy. And let's not forget the billions borrowed and added to our National Debt, nor the shambolic privatisation of the railways.

The last five years under Labour with record numbers of people in employment, a statutory minimum wage, an unparalled run of low inflation and low interest rates, minimum income guarantee for pensioners, more doctors, nurses, teachers and police being trained, he sees as failure. Oh, by the way, in those five years Labour has also repaid much of the Conservative debt.

Maybe I am missing something but it seems "Objective Englishman" and I live in different worlds. He sounds daft enough to be a Conservative.
