FOLLOWING the saga of Peter Foulkes being denied access on First North Western trains with his electric wheelchair (LET, August 2), I am surprised that you have not been swamped with support for him in his predicament.
It seems quite extraordinary, with all the legislation available to ease the plight of disabled people these days, that such a situation can occur.
Provided Mr Foulkes gives sufficient notice of his desire to travel to Manchester or Blackpool by train and specifies his travelling times both going and returning, I cannot believe that First North Western cannot ensure that the facilities for coping with his wheelchair are unable to be provided.
Let's hope that the Hyndburn Access Group, who are backing his plight, have success at their projected meeting with the train operator. If not, then I hope the Access Group take the case to the Strategic Rail Authority who, I am sure, will bring pressure to bear heavily on the train operator.
J G BROWN (Mr), Lammack Road, Blackburn.
