JOHN Winstanley (Letters, September 21) says that no dentist or hygienist has ever advised him against taking sodium fluoride. But has any ever advised him to?

He adds that anyone who wishes to drink pure water can buy a filter to remove fluoride. Where? There does not seem to be one on the market at present.

Besides, if I wish to buy a drink outside, will cafes be prepared to filter my water or pubs stock fluoride-free beer?

Mr Winstanley talks about spending money on removing toxic wastes from the eco-system. But what does he think sodium fluoride is? It is a highly toxic by-product of the aluminium and other smelting industries.

If it was proved beyond doubt that sodium fluoride to water was safe and if there was no other means of preventing tooth decay, then there might be some justification for mass medication.

However, there are alternatives. Simple dental hygiene taught by parents to children and regular visits to a dentist for check ups would be much more more effective.
