YOUNGSTERS in Pendle will be delighted to hear they may soon be able to enjoy computer games and stay fit in an innovative exercise arcade.

For years Pendle Leisure Trust has been encouraging the younger end of the market to exercise in a bid to keep them fit and off the streets.

Now the trust believes it has come up with a way of combining activity with computer games through an Exertris arcade, thought to be the first of it's kind in the country.

It will feature equipment which links exercise with arcade games and generally having fun.

The first piece of equipment for the arcade is now at Pendle Leisure Centre, in Colne. Called an Exertris bike, it is the world's first interactive gaming cycle.

It is also proposed that the arcade will feature large plasma screens allowing users to watch their progress in full view while competing, as well as disco lights and a top of the range sound system.

Exertris is the world's first interactive gaming cycle where the user's progress through an interactive game is controlled by the speed of their pedalling.

The game is viewed in three dimensional colour graphics on a flat screen monitor placed over the leaning post and users also control movement on screen with a small gaming pad on the handle-bars.

A spokesman for Pendle Leisure Trust said: "Cyclists find themselves pedalling harder and faster than in a usual work-out as they become more engrossed and the resistance levels are varied throughout the game.

"Consequently work-outs are more intense and enjoyable, burning more calories and appearing to go much faster."

The idea has been discussed with local MP Gordon Prentice, the local health authority and Pendle Youth Parliament.

All agree it is an exciting idea which would be welcomed as it would give Pendle youngsters their own space while encouraging them to keep fit.

Morgan Geldard, of Pendle Youth Parliament, said: "The project is very intriguing. This will be a positive move forward for the young people of Pendle."

Pendle Leisure Trust has also approached various funding bodies and applications are in place.

They are also on the look-out for any other innovative pieces of fitness equipment which will encourage youngsters to stay fit and healthy while enjoying themselves.
