NELSON ran riot with eight goals against Daisy Hill in the Worthington Challenge Trophy first round at Victoria Park on Saturday.
Dave Gray gave the Blues a two-goal lead by half time with goals after 16 and 26 minutes, but the cracks were already showing in the visitors' defence and their goal had led a charmed life at times with Glen Little hitting the post and Lee Coldridge shooting wide of an open goal.
Nelson got back to basics after 57 minutes with a series of accurate passes on the ground giving Dave Gray a simple tap-in at the far post to complete his hat trick and demoralise their opponents.
As play became one-way, Little again hit the woodwork before supplying a great cross for Lee Coldridge to meet with a powerful header into the top corner to make the score 4-0 to the Blues, after 66 minutes.
Three minutes later Paul Sconce provided a low cross to the far post where Stuart Mulligan blasted in goal number five for Nelson.
Daisy Hill defender Steve Obertelli was sent off for dissent after the goal, as his frustration boiled over, but the 10 men pulled a goal back after 73 minutes when Craig Thomas surprised the home defence with a first time shot from outside the penalty area.
Nelson reasserted their authority just two minutes later when Dave Leigh released Lee Coldridge who made it 6-1 with a low angled shot.
After 78 minutes Dave Gray raced clear on the left and his cross enabled Lee Coldridge to complete his hat trick with a close-range finish.
Glen Little struck the woodwork for the third time in the game with a shot against the crossbar after 80 minutes, but then it was Little who won the ball and provided the chance for Dave Gray to score his fourth and Nelson's eighth goal after 84 minutes to complete a successful afternoon.
John Bailey's side now face First Division Newcastle Town in the next round of the competition on November 2 at Victoria Park.
