AN 88-year-old woman suffered a fractured hip when a robber knocked her to the ground for £20.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the mugging in Colville Drive, Bury, on Saturday afternoon (Oct 5).
Irene Fitton, of Fusiliers Court, was walking home at 4.45pm when she was approached from behind by a man at the junction of Orpington Drive and Bexley Drive.
After the attack, he fled with a blue canvas bag, containing a black purse and around £20 in cash.
Police officers were on the scene within minutes where they carried out a full search of the area.
Mrs Fitton was taken to Fairfield General Hospital where she was yesterday (Mon Oct 7) undergoing surgery for the fracture, as well as treatment for cuts and bruises to her face, head and left hand.
Sgt Dave Henthorne from Bury Police said: "This was a callous attack on a frail, elderly lady who was going about her business in broad daylight.
"We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw anything suspicious."
Anyone with information should contact Bury CID on 856 8150 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
