TEENAGERS are being encouraged to end the growing 'drama' on East Lancashire's roads with a safe driving play staged in their schools.
'Legal Weapon' aims to change attitudes which caused the deaths of 13 young drivers in the county last year and injuries to a further 243.
The Ape Theatre Company production is being staged at three secondary schools in East Lancashire over the next two weeks.
Lancashire County Council's road safety group is using the play as part of its education strategy to show teenagers they need a responsible attitude in addition to driving skills.
County Coun Nora Ward, cabinet member for highways and transport said: "More young people between the ages of 16 to 26 are killed or maimed on the roads each year than for any other reason.
"Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group is working hard to encourage the target group to be more aware of the consequences of their actions on the road. This waste of young lives cannot be ignored."
The play tells the story of a sixth form couple as they encounter speeding, bravado and ultimately death when cars become part of their lives.
A big part of the drama is audience interaction to make sure the message is heeded.
In addition, the play also describes the strain on NHS resources and aims to increase teachers' confidence in delivering road safety education.
One hour performances are being staged at Haslingden High School today, Clitheroe Royal Grammar School on the next two Wednesdays and Burnley's Habergham High on October 17.
