A badminton tournament went down a smash with locals in Preston.

The competition was organised by Sanjay Tandon, of the Gujrat Hindu Centre, based in South Meadow Lane. Members of the Lancashire Fire Service, Lancashire Constabulary and the Probation service took part in the tournament.

Sanjay said, "It was great success, giving youngsters a chance to test their skills and enthusiasm against members of the public services."

Alan Garner, of the Probation service, won the singles section after beating Krupesh Parekh. Zeg Awan and Mebs Ahmed, of Lancashire Constabulary, proved too much for Krupesh Parekh and Kalpesh Parekh in the doubles.

A spokeman for the three public services said, "This was a chance for young people to meet representatives from the services and see them in a different light away from thier day to day roles."
