PENDLE Council leader Councillor Azhar Ali has spoken of his frustration and bitter disappointment for North West rail users after the publication of the Strategic Rail Authority's (SRA) draft strategy for the West Coast Main Line.
Speaking from Brussels as chairman of the North West Regional Assembly, Coun Ali said: "On face value the SRA seemed to think that 'a bit of something for everyone' will satisfy North West travellers and businesses. The problem is that there are no real winners in this proposal."
He said that the SRA consultation had reneged on the promise to deliver 140mph services throughout the North West and undermined the purpose of any genuine consultation.
Coun Ali said: "We have felt for some time that the SRA in its National Strategy is focusing on the easy wins -- overcrowding on commuter trains in the South East."
