VOLUNTARY and community groups throughout Rossendale whose work is suffering because of cut-backs and closures by the troubled council have been thrown a lifeline.
Community Action, based in Bury Road, Haslingden, has promised help with possible funding to keep voluntary groups operating and help to find new premises for those facing eviction.
Irene Kay, the centre development officer, said: "Community organisations work with the most vulnerable members of our society. Their work is vital and they help to combat poverty and exclusion, prevent crime and help people to cope with debt, disease and disabilities.
"Because they are run by volunteers they provide real value for money solutions for people's problems. It is the kind of work the council should be giving more help to, but in fact, because of Rossendale's problems the opposite is happening.
"As an interim measure, we are offering help. We have already helped scores of groups through our community chest grants.
"There is still a limited amount of money available. We can offer training and advice but most of all, as representatives of the whole voluntary sector, we can act as an advocate and spokesperson."
