A LONG-standing feud between two families erupted into early hours violence at 'pay back time' in Colne town centre.
Burnley Magistrates heard how David Bowes, 37, was seen to punch another man, and was dragged off by police and arrested.
Bowes, of Chad Street, Colne, admitted threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour and was given a 12 months conditional discharge with £55 costs.
Dermot Woodhead, defending, said Bowes was embarrassd and ashamed to be appearing in court.
There had been a long-standing feud for a number of years, the defendant had been subjected to violence and was followed after he had been out for a drink.
He tried to shake off the man and was concerned about his intentions. He was then told it was 'pay back time' and realised there was going to be a fight.
Mr Woodhead said when police arrived, the defendant was getting the upper hand. He had not started the trouble but gave as good as he got.
