HYNDBURN is a borough of 30-somethings, according to the latest census figures published last week.
Of the 81,487 people in the borough, the biggest contingent is in the 30 to 34 age group.
There are more men in that age group -- 3,185 -- than in any other group, whereas the largest number of women -- 3,117-- is in the 35 to 39 age group.
The lowest representation is in the 90 and over age group, but there are almost three times as many women as men in that category -- 349 compared to 102, the lowest showing for either gender.
Coun Tim O'Kane believes the disparity can be attributed to the First World War.
"That could be directly attributable to the Accrington Pals," he said.
"We lost more than 400 young men. That meant a lot of widows who never remarried. It just meant we lost a generation from Accrington."
