I THINK it is disgusting that Jim Bowen should feel forced to retire because of his remarks "nig nog," (LET, October 7).

Years and years ago it was a common phrase, not only used for coloured people but also for white people if you thought they were acting stupid.

There was no racial stigma attached in those days.

We had free speech then, now, it is slowly being taken away from us.
