LEIGH Harriers started the cross-country season with some outstanding results in the first South East Lancs Cross Country League meeting.
The Harriers first race saw 11 years old Hannah Warburton run a superb U13s leg to finish second in 11mins 33secs. Kristy Hogan was 15th in 13:29.
In the boys U13s event Leigh's only runner Isaac McCann did the club proud with a fifth place finish in 10:53. Mike Goddard was also involved in a close finish, losing out by just one second in a time of 12:20. Tom Henders, in his first race for the club, was seventh in 13:09.
The U15s race over the same distance saw Gemma Farley ran away from the field to win in 13:24. Emma Morris, just of the plane from America, ran superbly to finish eighth in 15:24. Kellie Thornton ran herself into the ground for the team, finishing in 16th place in 17:11 to give the team second place overall.
In the U17s men's race Alex Urmston lead the Leigh team home in first place. He was second overall in 25:48 with Sam Cooke third (25:53) and Andy Edwards eighth (28:16).
The U17s ladies team were also winner. Adele Swanton led the team home by finishing third in 29:44. Lizzy Heaton, despite missing the start, finished fourth in 31:44 and Emma Tongue was sixth in 33:06.
In the senior ladies race Eileen Casteldine was 34th in 32:53 and Sarah Cain 44th in 34:30.
The senior men's race saw the worst turnout of Harriers in years with only two athletes competing. Andy Arnold was 37th in 39:23 and Keith Boardman 48th in 40:02.
