I AM extremely concerned to hear that the sheltered workshop in Mill Hill, Blackburn, is under the threat of imminent closure on the basis of tenuous fiscal and political arguments by Blackburn with Darwen Social Services.
Having frequently visited the adjoining textile shop, I can testify to the quality and exceptional value of the products available there and have long thought it to be an excellent opportunity for people with disabilities, to contribute to society and also to achieve a feeling of self-worth that they may otherwise be denied.
If the organisation is running at a financial loss, then I am sure that there are people who could advise on improved management techniques for the centre.
Any concerns that the current policy perpetuates social exclusion for those employed there could be rectified by a re-defined policy that utilised the institution as a 'stepping stone' into mainstream employment, thus negating the argument that current practice discourages employees to move on.
I hope that other readers who have visited the workshop or those who share my feelings, make heard their voices as soon as is possible, before bureaucratic decisions, far-removed from the lives of the people involved, result in the wrongful closure of this hidden treasure of Mill Hill.
