A SCHEME which aims to protect children at local clubs and sports groups has been set up by the police.
The 'Child Safe' project is aimed at all organised children's activities outside school and has been set up by Lancashire Constabulary with help from the NSPCC and Social Services.
A special pack has been designed to give organisations information which encourages them to develop their own child protection policy and to create a safe environment where children can play.
It also informs parents and organisers about what to look out for in relation to child abuse and the procedure for reporting concerns.
"Child abuse can take the form of physical, sexual, emotional abuse or neglect," said Det Insp Phil McEntee.
"The adult responsible is most often someone who is known to the child and his or her family.
"The pack give organisers and parents information that allows them to look out for signs that someone might be an offender or that a child is being abused.
"There is also guidance on dealing with children, recruiting staff and volunteers and safety advice for children and parents."
The new scheme asks organisations to follow the Child Safe Code by adopting a voluntary policy and best practice approach, appointing a child protection officer, making staff and volunteers aware of the Code, and let all parents and children aware of what they are doing.
The Child Safe Pack is now available to bona fide organisations for £29.99 with all money going to other child protection initiatives.
