THE number of rats in the district has more than doubled - causing concern for the local council.
A TV programme highlighted the problem and focused on Morecambe, where the new sea defences create a perfect habitat for the scavenging rodents.
Street wardens Tony Consadine and Mandy Farinacci patrol the town, keeping careful watch for rubbish which could attract rats.
But the council's best weapon is Dillon and his handler Ray Haygarth.
The only council-employed canine pest control technician in the country, Dillon has his work cut out trying to keep the rat numbers down.
