WHEN the Mayor of Burnley, Coun Gordon Birtwistle, takes off the chains of office he likes to head into the hills which provide the backdrop to the town.
"I love the rugged moorland that's right on our doorstep," he said. "The air is wonderful and you get great views. It's exhilarating."
His favourite is walk over the tops to Clowbridge Reservoir and then on, suitably, to Water.
The Millennium Commission has planted thousands of trees in the area, he added.
"But unfortunately you don't seem to see the skylarks and lapwings any more," Coun Birtwistle said.
The Mayor is also a great admirer of the landscapes of the Ribble Valley and particularly enjoys making the short trips from Burnley to Sawley, and to Downham with its famous ducks.
Further afield, Coun Birtwistle and his wife like to drive over to the Fylde Coast, where Fairhaven Lake at Lytham -- with more ducks -- is the favourite port of call.
