FA Youth Cup Round One - Bury 2 Lincoln City 1 - BURY FC's youth production line has another crop of talented youngsters on the conveyor belt judging by this victory over Lincoln City on Monday night.
Two well taken Steve Maden goals, one in each half, saw the young Shakers through with Lincoln, who had former Shaker Phil Stant's son Craig among their number, replying courtesy of a controversial penalty on the hour mark.
As expected, first teamer Dave Nugent caught the eye but there were also a superb display from the tricky Simon Whaley who could be the next youngster to give Andy Preece selection problems.
While in defence left back Tom Kennedy looks well capable of following in the footsteps of his dad, former Shakers favourite Keith, and uncle Alan who once scored a winning goal in a European Cup final for Liverpool.
But to be fair all the youngsters played their part in a morale-boosting win that augurs well for the future.
Bury opened the scoring after 37 minutes and the mercurial Whaley was heavily involved.
His crossfield pass found Nugent who held up play intelligently before playing the ball into the path of Maden who gave the Imps 'keeper no chance.
The visitors levelled just before the hour mark when Adam Kerley, who hit the bar in the early stages, was harshly judged to have been pulled back in the penalty area. The Lincoln youngster dusted himself off and converted the subsequent spot kick.
But Bury weren't to be denied and Maden capped a great display by rifling home the winning goal ten minutes from time following a surging run from Nugent.
Youth team coach Andy Feeley was delighted with the win and said: "We created some good chances and the football was excellent when we were going forward.
"Dave Nugent must have had five chances alone in the first half but to be fair Lincoln had openings of their own.
"Our defenders were very young and our goalkeeper was only 15, but I felt they did well. They were only beaten by a penalty and that was harsh."
But Feeley saved most of his praise for the impressive Whaley.
"Simon is class. He has everything and can be whatever he wants to be.
"He reminds me a little of Trevor Sinclair when he was young. I'm sure, like Dave Nugent, he will go through to the first team and there are three or four more who will do too."
BURY: Liam Dorsey, Colin Kazim-Richards, Tom Kennedy, Christian Cooke, Craig Coote, Karl McDonald, Steve Taylor, Steve Maden, Dave Nugent, Simon Whaley, Dave Buchanan. Subs: Luke Horrocks, Shaun Roscoe, James Holden, James Sheath and Damian Quigley.
