A SYSTEM of portfolio holders has been introduced to Pendle Council. Each of the 10 members of the council executive, the main decision-making body, now has a special responsibility.

They will work with officers in the council's Forward Plan which sets out priorities over each quarter.

The portfolio holders are Coun Mohammed Iqbal (Housing), Coun Neil Akrigg (Communications), Coun Frank Clifford (Leisure & Culture), Coun Azhar Ali (Resources), Coun Alan Davies (Economic Development), Coun David Whipp (Performance Management), Coun Mahboob Ahmed (Democratic Engagement), Coun John David (Environment), Coun Tony Beckett (Neighbourhood & Community) and Coun Shelagh Derwent (Rural Affairs).

Philip Mousdale, executive director (Community Engagement), said: "The introduction of portfolios is part of the council's modernisation programme. It will mean that members of the executive can get more involved in the development and direction of the council's policy.

"They will take the lead in promoting and communicating to members of the public the work and objectives of the council."

Each portfolio holder will also have a deputy.
