A 29-YEAR-OLD man ordered to hand over a bottle of booze under the Blackburn town centre drinking ban ended up struggling violently with police.
Blackburn magistrates heard that during the struggle Meredith Angus Hughes' head collided with an officers face causing bruising and swelling.
Hughes, of Hope Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to police assault and failing to comply with a police officer's request to surrender liquor.
He also admitted being in breach of a conditional discharge imposed for offences of criminal damage and threatening behaviour.
He was made subject to a community rehabilitation order for 18 months and ordered to pay £50 compensation and £65 costs.
John Wood, prosecuting, said that when Hughes was approached by two officers in the early hours of the morning he initially denied having a bottle and then refused to hand it over.
When the officers tried to restrain him Hughes became increasingly aggressive and as he struggled his head struck one of the officers.
Mr Wood said the offences for which Hughes had received a conditional discharge were significant.
