THE JOURNEY to a person's final resting place in Whitefield is to run a lot smoother.

Members of Whitefield Hebrew Congregation were delighted to learn that Bury Council have finally agreed to "make-up" an unadopted road that leads to the cemetery.

Complaints had been made about the poor condition of Philips Park Road West. Large pot holes and ruts in the road meant that coffins had to be held down in hearses as they made their way to burials.

But an appeal to improve the road from the synagogue council was met with problems due to the cost of the scheme.

Last month the members, who had contributed £25,000 to the project, learned that there was a shortfall in the funding as residents living on Philips Park Road West had failed to contribute any money.

But Bury Council re-designed the plans and have come up with a new £125,000 scheme to take into account the funding issues.

Members of Whitefield and Unsworth Area Board agreed to endorse the project at its latest meeting and tenders for the work will be sent out.

Mr Len Phillips, of the synagogue council, said: "I did not think the outcome would be so positive but I can now report back to the committee and tell them the good news."
