A BURY teenager died when a car catapulted into the air and landed on its roof.

Passenger Andrew James Whitby, (18) of Skipton Close, was thrown 20 feet from the vehicle which crashed in Bradshaw Road, Bolton.

Two others, from Ramsbottom and Bury, were also injured in the incident at 12.30am on Friday (Oct 18).

Police said it was thought the driver had been overtaking another car when he lost control on a bend, near the junction with Tottington Road.

Andrew was in the rear seat of the Peugeot 106 GTi, which was being driven by a friend. The metallic green car hit an embankment, overturned and landed on its roof

He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with severe head injuries but died an hour later.

The 19-year-old driver from Ramsbottom had several fingers amputated at the scene after being cut free from the wreckage.

He was taken to Fairfield Hospital for treatment.

A second passenger, aged 19, from Bury, was treated for serious back injuries and taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Commenting on the operation to free the driver, Station Officer Jim O'Byrne from Bolton Central fire station said: "It took us ten minutes to free him.

"The car was in such a state that we had to use cutting equipment to get him out.

"When we arrived the paramedics were treating one passenger who was half in and half out of the vehicle.

"Another passenger was lying in the road after being thrown from a window."
