VOLUNTARY and community groups in East Lancs who are keen to improve their environment have support through charity group Whitbread Action Earth.

Their campaign challenges local communities to identify worthwhile projects within their own neighbourhood which require improvement and runs from December 25 to April 30, 2003.

Typical examples of projects include tree planting, making bird and bat boxes, improving footpaths and planting bulbs and shrubs.

The emphasis is on fun and education and many projects have offered opportunities for volunteers to learn new skills.

Eager groups can obtain grants of up to £50 to help towards tools, equipment, refreshments and materials.
