PRESTON and South Ribble firefighters will go on strike on Tuesday for the first time in 25 years unless a last minute agreement can be made.
Nearly nine in ten firefighters voted in favour of the action, but community leaders are concerned it could put lives at risk.
The Fire Brigades' Union admit that their series of strikes will leave the area short of fire and rescue equipment, but they have stood by their decision regardless.
Steve Harman, Lancashire brigade secretary, said: "This isn't about pay, it's about the future of the fire service."
Union members would like a 40 per cent pay rise and 87 per cent of voting firefighters supported the claim. While the strikes take place, a number of Green Goddess engines are expected to be based at Fulwood Barracks.
But many feel the Goddesses, with a top speed of between 35-50mph, may not be enough.
Preston firefighter Les Warren, 39, who agrees with the strike in principle, said: "Public support has been good, but the inadequacies of the Green Goddesses are there to be seen."
Just 18 of the army's Green Goddesses are set to patrol the county, usually covered by 65 fire engines.
Councillor Ian Hall, leader of Preston City Council, said he had questions over the issue of safety.
He said: "I am disappointed that it's having to come to a situation of strike action because the fire service is a vital emergency service for the community.
"It does pose a question as to the safety of individuals in the event of fires and other emergencies."
Union bosses are still negotiating over the possibility of emergency cover.
Coun Hall added: "I understand that if there was a major disaster then they would respond and I think that is some comfort."
And Councillor Howard Gore, leader of South Ribble Borough Council, said: "I am very very disappointed that firefighters feel the need to take strike action.
"Everyone has a right to do so, but lives are unquestionably going to be put at risk in this case.
"That causes me the utmost concern. I sincerely hope that even at this late stage a way forward can be found."
Firefighters plan to strike on:
Tuesday, October 29, to Thursday, October 31.
Saturday, November 2, to Monday, November 4.
Wednesday, November 6, to Thursday, November 14.
Friday, November 22, to Saturday, November 30.
Wednesday, December 4, to Thursday, December 12.
